Gender and Media Diversity Journal 7 - Gender, media, sport and 2010 |
| The Gender and Media Diversity Journal is the biennial journal of the Gender and Media Diversity Centre (GMDC).. The GMDC is a physical and virtual resource centre based in Southern Africa, managed by Gender Links and the Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network, with linkages in Africa and across the globe. The journal is an intellectual but not academic journal. It provides up-to-date and cutting edge information on media diversity in Southern Africa and the space for the dissemination of research findings and projects; case studies; campaigns; policy developments; and opinion and debate on media practice in the region.. Each journal covers latest developments but also focuses on a different thematic area identified in consultation with the GMDC advisory group.
The seventh edition of the Gender and Media Diversity Journal will focus on the topic of “Gender, media, sport and 2010.” The FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 is one of the most important upcoming sporting, economic, media and social events for South Africa and the Southern Africa region. The event has the potential to offer women and men in the region opportunities to participate in and access a range of economic opportunities as well as to ensure a social legacy from 2010. However, for the most part a gender perspective on the event and sport in general is missing. A concerted effort is required to consult women regarding how they can access economic and other strategic sectors of this event. Delivery of the FIFA Soccer World Cup will happen at the regional and local level and local government, as the sphere closest to the people, is critical to the economic empowerment of communities in general and of women in particular.
