New HIV Treatment Guidelines Indicate Importance Of Early, Individualized Antiretroviral Treatment MedicalNews

3 August 2010-(Medical News)-Advances in antiretroviral treatment (ART) have shown that the progressive immune system destruction caused by HIV infection, including AIDS, can be prevented, indicating the importance of beginning ART early, when a person with HIV infection is without symptoms, according to the 2010 recommendations of the International AIDS Society-USA Panel, published in the July 21 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on HIV/AIDS. This shift to earlier therapy is made possible by the increased understanding of the negative consequences of ongoing HIV replication and the development of newer drugs providing the potential for potent viral suppression in initial and subsequent therapy.

Africa Not On Track To Halve Poverty By 2015

Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Executive Secretary Abdoulie Janneh said the global economic downturn will keep Africa from meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of halving poverty by 2015, Reuters reports. According to the news service, "Africa was thought to be largely insulated against the worst effects of the global economic crisis but saw healthy growth projections slashed due to the crisis."

UNAIDS Executive Director vists high HIV burdened countries in southern Africa

Zimbabwe – Harare – 26 January 2010 (SAfAIDS) - As the nation gears itself for the constitutional reform process, the Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV (ZNNP+) with technical support from the Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) has embarked on a national consultative process that seeks to ensure that the concerns of people living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly women and young people, are included in the constitution making process.

UN Secretary-General applauds the removal of entry restrictions based on HIV status by United States of America and Republic of Korea

GENEVA - WASHINGTON DC- 4 January 2010  - UNAIDS strongly welcomes the elimination of travel restrictions based on HIV status by the Republic of Korea, effective 1 January 2010. It also commends the United States for full implementation of the final rule that removes entry restrictions which means that travellers living with HIV can freely enter the United States of America as of today.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated President Lee Myung-bak on the Republic of Korea’s decision. “I applaud President Lee for his country’s leadership in ending restrictions towards people living with HIV that have no public health benefit,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. 

New UNAIDS Data released: 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update UNAIDS
GENEVA / SHANGHAI, 15 December 2009 – According to new data in the 2009 AIDS epidemic update, new HIV infections have been reduced by 17% over the past eight years. Since 2001, when the United Nations Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS was signed, the number of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa is approximately 15% lower, which is about 400,000 fewer infections in 2008.

New local TV and radio HIV series launched SAfAIDS
Harare, Zimbabwe (SAfAIDS MRD) 5 February 2009-Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS), in collaboration with Population Services International (PSI), is proud to announce the launch of a new 26 – programme radio and television series, ‘Positive Talk’, which will air for the next 6 months on Zimbabwe’s national broadcast stations. The weekly series will air every Sunday evening between 7.30 pm and 8 pm, on ZBC TV, and every Tuesday between 6.30 pm and 7 pm, on Radio Zimbabwe.

World AIDS Day marks 20th anniversary of solidarity

(By Sara Speicher) For Eric Sawyer, the late 1980s was a “war time situation”.  “People with AIDS were fighting for their lives and for their friends”, says Sawyer, an AIDS activist and co-founder of ACT UP New York. By 1988, seven years after the first case of AIDS was reported, AIDS was causing more deaths in the US  then there were in the Vietnam War, and between 5 and 10 million people were estimated to be infected with HIV around the world. Yet governments, media and society in general were not giving AIDS adequate attention. So, “people with AIDS had to literally take to the streets and block traffic and take over government buildings”, Sawyer recalls.
