Television drama on multiple relationships on ZBC TV soon
Harare, Zimbabwe, 15 February 2010-(ACTION)- A new television drama exposing the complexities around multiple relationships and love in a time of HIV and AIDS, will be aired on the ZBC TV soon. The television drama was launched through a “march” last week.
UNAIDS Executive Director vists high HIV burdened countries in southern Africa
The Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Mr Michel Sidibe, will be embarking on a multi-country visit to three of the hyper-endemic countries in Southern Africa. The visit will commence in Swaziland from 14 – 16 February 2010, Botswana on 17 -18 February 2010 and South Africa 19 February 2010.

PLHIV geared to have their voices included in the Constitution making process

Zimbabwe – Harare – 26 January 2010 (SAfAIDS) - As the nation gears itself for the constitutional reform process, the Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV (ZNNP+) with technical support from the Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) has embarked on a national consultative process that seeks to ensure that the concerns of people living with HIV (PLHIV), particularly women and young people, are included in the constitution making process.

UN Secretary-General applauds the removal of entry restrictions based on HIV status by United States of America and Republic of Korea

GENEVA - WASHINGTON DC- 4 January 2010  - UNAIDS strongly welcomes the elimination of travel restrictions based on HIV status by the Republic of Korea, effective 1 January 2010. It also commends the United States for full implementation of the final rule that removes entry restrictions which means that travellers living with HIV can freely enter the United States of America as of today.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated President Lee Myung-bak on the Republic of Korea’s decision. “I applaud President Lee for his country’s leadership in ending restrictions towards people living with HIV that have no public health benefit,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. 

New UNAIDS Data released: 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update UNAIDS
GENEVA / SHANGHAI, 15 December 2009 – According to new data in the 2009 AIDS epidemic update, new HIV infections have been reduced by 17% over the past eight years. Since 2001, when the United Nations Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS was signed, the number of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa is approximately 15% lower, which is about 400,000 fewer infections in 2008.
Harare Zimbabwe-14 December 2009-(SAfAIDS)-The National Partnership Platform, an information, dialogue and advocacy platform on HIV and TB in Zimbabwe will tomorrow (15 December 2009) host  a Discussion Forum  to explore the barriers to achieving universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment and care by 2010.

MESSAGE ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION
OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
In the ten years since the General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the circle of engagement has widened.  More groups and individuals, including men and boys, are getting involved in efforts to prevent and address this heinous violation of women’s human rights.  There has also been significant progress at the national level as many countries have adopted laws and comprehensive action plans. 

Murewa community launches OneLove Campaign

Murewa district in Mashonaland East province, is launching an HIV prevention campaign called OneLove and this becomes the first time that the programme is being launched at community level in Zimbabwe.

UNIFEM Launches Global Action Platform to End Violence against Women
Nairobi, Kenya — 11 November 2009 - United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) today launched the global advocacy initiative Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women, which will stimulate, count and showcase actions on ending violence against women. The innovative platform will spotlight global efforts and demonstrate the groundswell of support and actions on the issue.

SAfAIDS launches HIV information kiosk

Harare - 13 October 2009 - Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) in partnership with the Matabeleland AIDS Council (MAC) will, on Thursday, the 15th of October, launch an HIV information kiosk in Plumtree to respond to the HIV information needs of people in Matabeleland South province.

PITTSBURGH -16 September 2009 – Microbicide Trial Network – Hopeful that some of the same antiretroviral (ARV) drugs used to treat HIV infection can also prevent it, researchers from the Microbicide Trials Network have enrolled the first participants into a new, large-scale clinical trial testing two approaches of the strategy in women.

Zambia, 15 June 2009-(Tisunge Ana Athu Akazi Coalition TAAAC)-In Soweto, South Africa, thousands of black school children took to the streets in 1976, in a march more than half a mile long, to protest the inferior quality of their education and to demand their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of young boys and girls were shot down; and in the two weeks of protest that followed, more than a hundred people were killed and more than a thousand were injured.

Gates Foundation Invests in 81 Unconventional Global Health Research Projects
SEATTLE – The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced 81 grants of US$100,000 each to explore bold and largely unproven ways to improve health in developing countries.  The grants were awarded to researchers in 17 countries through the foundation’s Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, which aims to develop a pipeline of creative ideas that could change the face of global heath.

New local TV and radio HIV series launched SAfAIDS
Harare, Zimbabwe (SAfAIDS MRD) 5 February 2009-Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS), in collaboration with Population Services International (PSI), is proud to announce the launch of a new 26 – programme radio and television series, ‘Positive Talk’, which will air for the next 6 months on Zimbabwe’s national broadcast stations. The weekly series will air every Sunday evening between 7.30 pm and 8 pm, on ZBC TV, and every Tuesday between 6.30 pm and 7 pm, on Radio Zimbabwe.
National HIV Treatment Literacy Sensitisation Meeting for Policy Makers

World AIDS Day marks 20th anniversary of solidarity

(By Sara Speicher) For Eric Sawyer, the late 1980s was a “war time situation”.  “People with AIDS were fighting for their lives and for their friends”, says Sawyer, an AIDS activist and co-founder of ACT UP New York. By 1988, seven years after the first case of AIDS was reported, AIDS was causing more deaths in the US  then there were in the Vietnam War, and between 5 and 10 million people were estimated to be infected with HIV around the world. Yet governments, media and society in general were not giving AIDS adequate attention. So, “people with AIDS had to literally take to the streets and block traffic and take over government buildings”, Sawyer recalls.
